Ideally you will hold a qualification in Health and Social care for either Children or Adults but this is not essential.

  • An interest in working with children, young people, or adults with disabilities (previous experience is helpful but not essential for volunteering or placements)
  • A friendly, approachable nature and the ability to build positive relationships
  • A genuine caring attitude, with patience, empathy, and understanding
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with a willingness to learn
  • The confidence to work independently with guidance and support
  • A flexible approach to availability, including day, evening, weekend, or overnight opportunities (depending on the type of placement or volunteering role)

We welcome students who are keen to learn, develop practical skills, and gain real‑world experience in care. You’d be a great fit for a placement, paid work with us if you demonstrate:

  • A genuine interest in supporting vulnerable children and making a positive difference
  • A willingness to communicate, listen, and learn, including developing basic recording and reporting skills with guidance
  • An understanding of the importance of care and support plans, with full support provided to help you understand how these work in practice
  • The ability to remain calm, respectful, and supportive in challenging situations, with structured supervision and learning opportunities
  • A kind, approachable, and reliable attitude, and a desire to work as part of a supportive team
  • An enthusiastic mindset, openness to new ideas, and the confidence to learn while using your own initiative appropriately
  • Basic IT confidence, with the ability to use an iPad or laptop to support learning and access online systems
