Bal Shares Excitement of Forthcoming MBE Award with Progress Team

“I couldn’t have achieved this without you. This MBE is for all of us, it is a recognition of our collective effort.”

In a heartwarming virtual meeting with the Progress team on Monday, Bal Dhanoa, Progress’ Founder and CEO, and a stalwart in the social care sector in the UK, shared the thrilling news of her forthcoming visit to Windsor Castle to receive her latest recognition – a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

According to the official gazette announcing the honour, Bal is set to receive the MBE in recognition of her outstanding work with children and their families. This prestigious honour recognises her exceptional contributions to social care over the past four decades.

Addressing the Progress team, Bal, with palpable emotion, recounted the pride and honour she felt upon learning of her forthcoming MBE, underscoring her dedication to social care and her long-standing commitment to communities.

Bal’s journey in social care spans over four decades, beginning at the age of 18. She emphasised the significance of the MBE not just for herself, but for her entire family. “My family has been in this country for 100 years, contributing to its development. This award is a testament to our sacrifices and hard work,” Bal remarked.

Reflecting on her career, she shared, “I always want to help people, and I am inspired by my brother, who I have cared for all my life.” Her early experiences in voluntary work and social services laid the foundation for her impactful career, including transforming care homes and setting up numerous social care projects. She vividly recalled the challenges she faced, from dealing with inadequate care conditions to pushing for systemic changes, always driven by a deep-seated desire to improve the lives of young people and vulnerable individuals.

Bal’s passion for social care led her to establish Progress, a company that has thrived despite numerous challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. “COVID was a lesson for us all, but the strength and resilience of our team ensured we emerged stronger,” she noted, praising the leadership and teamwork that guided them through tough times.

Looking ahead, Bal expressed her ongoing commitment to mentoring and supporting young people in the sector. “What inspires me now is seeing young people passionate about making a difference in social care. It is rewarding to nurture their potential and help them achieve their goals,” she said.

The meeting also offered a glimpse into Bal’s personal side. She shared a humorous anecdote about receiving the MBE notification. Mistaking the official brown envelope for a tax bill, she hesitated to open it. “When I finally did, I nearly fell off my chair! It was an incredible surprise,” she laughed, recounting the joy and disbelief she felt.

In her closing remarks, Bal thanked her team at Progress, attributing her success to their unwavering support. “I could not have achieved this without you. This MBE is for all of us, it is a recognition of our collective effort,” she said, her voice filled with gratitude.

As the meeting concluded, Bal’s heartfelt words resonated with the team members on the call, reaffirming the importance of dedication, teamwork, and the relentless pursuit of betterment in social care. Bal’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have, inspiring others to strive for excellence and compassion in their own journeys.

Bal Dhanoa to receive MBE for Services to Children with Special Educational Needs and Their Families

Bal Dhanoa, Founder and Chief Executive of Progress Care Solutions, is set to receive an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the King’s Birthday 2024 Honours List. She receives the MBE for her outstanding work with children and families. This prestigious honour recognises her outstanding contributions to social care over the past four decades.

“The recognition is for her services to children with special educational needs and their families. Bal has dedicated her life to making a difference, and enabling disabled people to lead fulfilling lives,” said Claire Rogers, Managing Director, Progress.

Bal’s career has been marked by pioneering advancements in care for disabled children and young people. She championed respite care, providing much-needed breaks for families while offering enriching experiences for children. Her work with Birmingham City Council’s Shared Care Programme gained national recognition, shaping government initiatives for disabled children.

Progress was founded in 2000 building on Bal’s passion for doing things differently, and has since grown into a leading and trusted provider of care for children and adults in the Midlands through a wide range of services, including residential homes, fostering services, and community-based support.

“I am deeply humbled and honoured to receive this MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours,” said Bal. “This recognition is not just for me, but for the entire Progress team, my family, and the strong women who have inspired me throughout my life.”

Bal’s commitment to social care extends beyond her professional work. She is a dedicated supporter of various charities, including initiatives to improve the lives of looked-after children.

Her charitable works include supporting various charities through out the years, and sponsoring young vulnerable girls to achieve Education so they are able to work and support their families and communities in India and Africa.

The MBE is a testament to Bal’s unwavering dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable individuals and her significant contributions to the social care sector.

National Carers’ Week 2024: Acknowledging the Silent Workforce

As National Carers’ Week 2024 unfolds, it is crucial to shine a light on the unsung heroes who balance professional and personal responsibilities with immense dedication. This year’s theme, “Recognising and Supporting Carers in the Community,” underscores the importance of acknowledging and assisting those who care for others, often at great personal sacrifice.

Claire Rogers, Managing Director of Progress, highlights the challenges carers face daily. In her recent video message, Claire shared her insights and firsthand experiences, emphasising the increased pressures on carers, particularly post-COVID-19.

“A lot of us these days have got additional responsibilities outside of work. And after COVID, certainly there are more people that are needing support, whether you have children, whether you have relatives, close family members that are needing support, and that makes work harder,” Claire said, reflecting on the growing demands placed on carers.

National Carers’ Week, organised by Carers UK, aims to raise awareness of the vital role carers play and the challenges they encounter. According to Carers UK, around one in nine people now have caring responsibilities, with one in six having to give up their jobs to care for loved ones. This statistic is particularly poignant in the social care sector, where professionals are disproportionately affected.

Claire acknowledges this disparity, stating, “When we work in social care, we are disproportionately affected. I know certainly from my own experience because I was the carer in the family I was called upon when a family member needed that support. It could make it harder, when you’re doing that every day, and having that emotional connection to somebody just adds another layer of complexity onto caring for the person.”

Progress, under Claire’s leadership, is committed to offering the flexibility needed to accommodate its team members that are also carers. “We recognise that we’ve got to be flexible in our work. Social care is a 24/7 industry. It is one where we can be flexible, we can offer alternatives, and that is what we are trying to do here at Progress — make sure that people can have a job that bends and flexes to life,” she said.

Claire also stressed the importance of open communication between employers and employees to ensure that carers feel supported. “A conversation actually is really important, being open and honest and transparent about what’s going on, so that we can support you. It is life. And we want to be there and help you to progress and develop and not have to put your life on hold,” she explained.

Carers UK encourages communities, employers, and policymakers to recognise the invaluable contributions of carers. During National Carers’ Week, various events and activities are organised to celebrate carers, provide them with support, and raise awareness about the issues they face.

As we observe National Carers’ Week 2024, let us all take a moment to appreciate the dedication and resilience of carers who provide care and support selflessly. Their efforts ensure that vulnerable individuals receive the care they need while often juggling their own personal and professional lives.

What makes someone a perfect fit for Progress?

At Progress, we are on a mission to make a real difference in the lives of young people. Our Managing Director, Claire Rogers, recently shared her insights on what makes someone a perfect fit for our team. If you are considering a career in social care and want to be part of a team that values connection, passion, and personal growth, read on.

Claire began by emphasising the importance of shared values. “Of course we want people that are experienced. Of course we want people that have done this work before,” she said. “But first and foremost, what we’re looking for are people who are aligned to our values. People that are coming into social care because they care, because they want to make a difference, because they are passionate about making a difference, because they can connect with young people.”

At Progress, the ability to connect with young people is paramount. Claire highlighted that beyond the paperwork and academic pressures, the real value lies in those who can build genuine connections. “People who actually want to play and are enjoying being here. We lose sometimes that connection to what we are doing because there is so much pressure over paperwork and academia. But actually, there’s nothing more valuable than somebody that can come in and can connect with young people, that can listen and take feedback, learn.”

We also believe in fostering an environment where learning from mistakes is encouraged. “One of the things we’re really proud of here at Progress is where we try not to be punitive. We accept and recognise that everyone’s human, people make mistakes. I think it’s important to recognise that, but as long as we learn from those mistakes, I think that’s what’s really important.”

Claire’s message is clear: Progress is looking for people from all walks of life. “We’re looking for all types of people. There is no age limitation, there is no age restrictions, there is no gender or race. At the end of the day, we’re all people needing support and we’re all there for the common goal, which is to make a difference to people’s lives.”

If you share our passion for making a difference and want to work in an environment that values your growth and connection with others, we invite you to join our team. Click here to explore our latest career opportunities.

Together, let us create positive experiences and improved outcomes for children and young people.

Career Growth at Progress: The Priya Story

“Being the youngest here was daunting at first, but the responsibility has matured me in ways I hadn’t anticipated.”

At Progress, career growth isn’t just a possibility; it’s a promise. Our commitment to fostering professional development is embodied in the inspiring journey of Priya, who transitioned from a live-in carer to a respected team leader at Portland House. Her story is a testament to the opportunities and support available to everyone who joins our team.

Priya’s journey with Progress began three years ago in October. Reflecting on her start, Priya recalls, “I really needed a job that would pay the bills. I had experienced a loss in the family and took time off. I had been working as a live-in carer, traveling across the UK to care for people in need.”

Despite initial uncertainties when Portland House was restructuring, Priya’s determination saw her through various roles within the organisation. “I moved around quite a bit,” she recalls, “but eventually, I returned to Portland House, where I felt truly at home.”

Priya’s ascent to team leader was a natural evolution driven by necessity and her proactive approach. “Our team needed leadership,” she explains. “I had been stepping up in various roles even before officially becoming a team leader. The support from my colleagues was incredible.”

In her role, Priya manages shifts, allocates tasks, and ensures that every aspect of care is meticulously executed. “We’re not just colleagues; we’re friends,” Priya emphasizes. “The bond we share as a team is essential in navigating the challenges we face.”

Youth, Maturity, and Dedication

Despite being the youngest team member, Priya’s maturity and dedication shine through. “Being the youngest here was daunting at first,” she admits. “But the responsibility has matured me in ways I hadn’t anticipated.”

Priya believes that the ideal team member at Portland House needs to handle challenging situations with empathy and assertiveness. “We need people who can handle tough situations with empathy and assertiveness,” she stresses.

Looking towards the future, Priya is determined to achieve an outstanding rating for Portland House by maintaining strong team dynamics and prioritising the children’s well-being. “Completing paperwork diligently and focusing on communication are crucial,” she explains. “We want to ensure that every child’s needs are met.”

As she continues her journey, Priya is eager to further her qualifications and explore new opportunities at Progress. “I’m content as a team leader for now,” she says, “but I’m eager to explore new opportunities at Progress and continue growing.”

Meet Amy: Oak Cottage’s New Manager

We are thrilled to introduce Amy as the new Home Manager at Oak Cottage, a vital service within the Progress community. With a rich background in nursing and a passion for working with children with complex needs, Amy brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to our team.

Amy’s journey in healthcare began in palliative care for children with tracheostomies. “My first job was working with children in palliative care, and I stayed there for years,” she recalls. Her career then took her to a general hospital paediatric ward, where she worked for nearly seven years. Later, Amy transitioned to a county hospital specialising in children’s mental health.

Throughout her career, Amy has developed a deep understanding of and passion for autism and ADHD. “I have three children, two of whom are autistic,” she shares. “This personal experience has fueled my passion for advocating for children with autism and ensuring they receive the best possible care.”

Amy’s approach to care is rooted in empathy and a desire to create a fulfilling environment for children with complex needs. She emphasises the importance of understanding each child’s unique experiences and finding effective coping mechanisms. “For instance, boys and girls often display autistic traits differently. My son is very reactive and sensitive to noise, while my daughter internalises everything,” Amy explains. This nuanced understanding allows her to tailor care strategies to individual needs.

At Oak Cottage, Amy is committed to enhancing staff knowledge and training, particularly regarding physical health and complex care needs. “When working with children that are so complex, it’s crucial to understand why you’re doing something,” she states. Amy’s goal is to create a supportive and knowledgeable team that can provide the highest level of care.

Amy also believes in creating a home-like environment for the children. “Eating is not just about putting food in your mouth; it’s about the sensory process, like the touch and smell of the food,” she notes. She aims to introduce experiences that many children might be missing, such as communal meals that engage all senses and foster a family-like atmosphere.

Trust and honesty are core values for Amy. “Trust is the most important thing,” she asserts. “If you can’t trust someone, you have no boundaries. I always tell my staff, if you’re honest with me, I’ll have your back 100%.”

Amy’s leadership style is already making an impact. “I’m very different from everyone else who’s been here. I’m implementing rules and following through on them. I believe we’ll get there with time and support.”

We are excited to see the positive changes Amy will bring to Oak Cottage and look forward to the continued growth and development of our services under her leadership.
